Tuesday, September 10, marked World World Suicide Prevention Day.
The purpose of this day is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented.
Senior Psychologist, Prof. Joseph Osafo, on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, gave an estimated number of Ghanaians who have either died by suicide or made attempts.
According to him, 20% of University students are harrassed and opt for suicide.
He also revealed that more than 500 Ghanaians have in this year attempted suicide but for timely intervention by other people.
“As At June 30th, 2024, eighty-one (81) people in Ghana committed suicide. Five hundred and eighty-five (585) people attempted suicide”, he stated.
He advised the citizens to be each other’s keeper, disclosing some signs leading to suicide are depression and speeches that show anxiety.
On how to prevent suicide, Prof. Osafo charged parents, guardians and friends to be vigilant, pay listening ear to people, offer support and resources and be empathetic towards them.
