Tomatoes Farmers within Babianiha and Kofi Badukrom in the Dormaa Central Municipality of the Bono Region where tomatoes are produced in greater quantities have disclosed the reasons that led to a sudden increase in prices of tomatoes on the Ghana market.
Some farmers revealed that price increase in all the farm inputs is a major factor for the high prices of tomatoes disclosing that a tin of tomato seeds costs over Gh¢2,400 which a farmer needs over 4- 5 or more tins with other agric inputs having their prices being skyrocketed which directly affect the pricing of the tomatoes on the market.
They also factored labour costs explaining that you need labour right from the start of the tomato farm until the end products are brought home for buyers hence a lot of factors necessitated the higher prices to help them make little profit out of their tedious work.
Some of the buyers who explained why there were higher prices of tomatoes on the market indicated that initially, farmers gave a box of tomatoes to them for over Gh¢6,000 which resulted in a high market price of tomatoes denoting that producer prices have begun to fall hence the market price has also fallen.
