Accra, August 12, 2024 – Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to establish a dedicated board committee to oversee the licensing and regulation of small-scale mining activities in Ghana.

At the NDC Youth Manifesto launch in Accra, Raymond Nana Ebbah, the mining spokesperson, revealed that President Mahama has committed to offering financial support and enhanced security for small-scale miners, recognizing their crucial role in the nation’s economy.

“He also announced that the former President will create a board committee to ensure the proper licensing and regulation of small-scale mining operations, thereby improving safety and efficiency. Additionally, this committee will provide necessary funding and security to bolster these operations.”

The announcement was warmly received by the youth wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who have long advocated for greater support for small-scale miners.

Former President Mahama views this initiative as a significant step toward formalizing and legitimizing the small-scale mining sector, which has struggled with illegal activities and environmental issues. By offering financial aid and security, Mahama aims to enhance the sector’s productivity and safety while fostering responsible mining practices.
