The National Communications Authority (NCA) has acknowledged public concerns, particularly on social media, about the high cost of internet data and the designation of MTN as a Significant Market Power (SMP).
Many people have demanded the NCA board’s dissolution due to high data costs and unreliable supply, linked to MTN’s role as a SMP.
In a statement on July 22, NCA reassured consumers that it is committed to promoting fair competition and safeguarding their interests in the telecommunications sector.
It explained that the classification of MTN as an SMP is part of the NCA’s mandate to ensure a level playing field in the market and protect consumer choice.
“It is important to note that the SMP classification is not intended to punish or stifle MTN’s operations but rather to ensure a level playing field in the market and protect consumer choice.
