The leadership of the New Patriotic Party on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, had extensive deliberations with the National Peace Council Committee on Code of Conduct on Vigilantism and Elections Related Violence, regarding recent developments in the political arena that threatens the peaceful conduct of the 2024 general elections.

In his welcome address to the Committee, Mr. Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of the NPP, praised the National Peace Council for contributing to the development of democracy in Ghana through their relentless advocacy for peace.

Chairman of the Committee, Alhaji Bin Salih Mauvi, began his address by praising the NPP and NDC for disbanding their vigilante groups but insisted that both parties can and must do more to guarantee peace before, during and after the 2024 general elections. He noted that the National Peace Council is particularly worried about the frequent use of inflammatory and incendiary language by politicians on radio and campaign events, which they believe, threatens the stability of the country. He implored all political parties to be ambassadors for peace by cautioning their members against the use of violence and intimidation in the lead-up to the general elections.

In his closing remark, the General Secretary opined that since Ghana’s return to democracy in 1992, the NPP has been a genuine advocate for peace and on instances where the Party had legitimate concerns about electoral processes and outcomes, they only advocated for reforms without taking the path of violence and chaos that could have threatened the country’s peace and security.

He insisted that the NPP is committed to the peaceful conduct of the 2024 elections and will accept the outcome whether in victory or defeat. He however remarked that despite the Party’s pledge to refrain from acts likely to jeopardize the peace of Ghana, the NPP will not kowtow to intimidation by any political party and admonished other political parties to commit to peace by signing the Peace Accord for the 2024 general elections.

Other national officers of the Party who attended the meeting were, Madam Rita Talata Asobayire; National First Vice Chairman, Alhaji Massaudu Osman; National Second Vice Chairman, Joseph Nganiba Kwayaja; Deputy National Organiser, Mr. William Yamoah; Director for Finance and Administration, Mr. Kwadwo Afari; Director for Protocol, Mr. Kwame Amponsah Kyeretwie; Director for External Affairs, Dr. Ernest Owusu-Kumih; Director for Research and Jennifer Ofori Appiah; Deputy Director for Communications.
